IRISH RIVER PIKE; part 1
It is a Sunday morning in February. My youngest son is playing a soccer match with the Tipperary squad against Waterford. I keep an eye on my watch as I have a plan for the rest of the afternoon: fly fishing for pike in the river Suir.
FIRST RATE IDE
It’s been months ago since I have been out fishing. The waters I fish with pleasure so often are frozen for months now and besides that it’s much colder my hands can handle. The last few weeks I am a little frustrated about the weather, but at times when the sun comes through I start thinking about fishing for ide.
BALLYHASS LAKES
At the end of the rainbow…. You will find : rainbows…….If a couple of years ago someone had told me that I would be fishing for stocked rainbows, I would have declared him nuts.
THE BLUE WINGED OLIVE BLUES
The months of July and August are great months for fishing blue winged olive ( Ephemerella ignita) imitations. The water temperature has increased a good bit and hatches occur during the day but moreover during the evening time.
MAYFLY IS ON! PART 3
The weather has improved for the last couple of days. All of a sudden a training at work is overbooked leaving me with an empty calendar. Although there is always plenty of work I realize that it is a great opportunity to fish the may fly again.
MAYFLY IS ON! PART 2
The good thing about fishing is that there is always a next time. After a tough day I am back at the lake again. Simon is ready to go and it is around half ten as we head off for the first drift.
MAYFLY IS ON! PART 1
For fly fishers the month of May is a month of high expectations. The Mayfly is on !! May flies (Ephemeroptera Danica) can be found on most of the Irish lakes and on some stretches of rivers.
FLOAT-TUBING THE BALTIC SEA
The main reason I never made use of the float-tube during these trips is undoubtedly the fuss resulting from this. Packing and drag along all kinds of tackle, fins, air-pump, the vessel, etc is a thing I can't match, besides that it's not in accordance with the way I experience fishing the Baltic sea.
WINTER-NYMPHING: THE DELICATE WAY
Many fly-fishers ignore the cold season. Maybe this arose in the time we had a closed season in The Netherlands, but it could be the cold weather too. Maybe they use the winter-time to fill the box, but it also might be a lack of confidence in winter-fishing.
PIKE DITCH
When I woke up the next morning I heard the wind howling around the house and rain hammering on my bedroom window, quit a nice day for pike on the fly. During a heavy breakfast and a can of black coffee I considered where to go.
AUTUMN ROACH
Just an ordinary Sunday morning in the end of October and a few hours available to go fishing. I made an appointment with Otto this morning. After I collected him with my car we drive to an artificial constructed lake where the local fly-fishing association organised an activity.
LIFE CAN BE GOOD
It's dark and very early in the morning. Our car is stuffed with gear and we're heading for the IJsselmeer. A big lake, the biggest, in the heart of Holland. We know, by experience, that there is a fair change of catching Ide alongside the shores of the IJsselmeer.
IDE; HOW TO FISH
Certainly fishing for ide is not very complicated. With simple tackle and a little devotion one is almost certain to catch ide, but there are a few things that may help a fly-fisher to become a passionate and experienced ide-fisher.
DOCTOR! DOCTOR!
In February, when the days lengthen, the sun peeps through every once and a while, and the first lapwings can be seen in the fields I begin to suffer from the annual ide-fever. Ide-fiver is not harmful, but it really is contagious. After catching an ide on the fly you stand a good chance to become a fellow ide-angler.
SEDUCED BY BOOBS
Searching for a way to fish slowly close to the bottom I started experimenting with boobies, in combination with a sinking line. Of course this method was not new, but it was not the sort of tackle one would expect for an ide-fisher, and many fellow flyfishers were doubting my common sense.
